The word Internet has quickly become part of the vocabulary of most
Australians, specially the younger ones. But what impact will the Net have on
Australian society? How well prepared is Australia for the technology? Daniel
Petre and David Harrington, both with a background of working for Microsoft in
Australia and overseas, explore such questions in a book released last month by
Lansdowne Publishing and Pan Macmillan (The Clever Country? Australia鈥檚 Digital
Future, $19.95). Petre and Harrington claim that the Boards of too many
Australian companies are well behind their American counterparts in
incorporating on-line technology into their businesses. 鈥淔or the average
Australian senior manager there is almost a stigma attached to using a PC,鈥 they
say. 鈥淢any take the view that the Internet is simply a curiosity appealing to a
small number of computer geeks, and irrelevant to a serious businessman.鈥 This,
they maintain, is a dangerous assumption.
