Babies can burn their mouths if their food is too hot. Parents who now have
to test the temperature themselves will soon be able to tell whether the food is
safe simply from the colour of a plastic spoon. The spoon, which has been
patented by B&H Liquid Crystal Devices of Red Lion Square in London, is
coated with thermochromic material of the type used for strip thermometers (UK 2
307 298). Normally the colour of the coating is blue, but if the food is too hot
the spoon will turn pink.
