Researchers at De Montfort University in Leicester have devised a system that
bespoke tailors can use to measure up their customers (WO 00/55644). The subject
stands in front of an infrared camera that’s surrounded by 60 ultrasound
transmitters. The camera forms a 2D thermal image of the body. At the same time,
the pencil-thin ultrasound beams are reflected first from the front of the
clothing, then the body surface, then the far side of the body and finally the
rear of the clothing. The detector discards echoes from the clothes, leaving a
measurable image of the body. Blending the thermal and ultrasound images creates
a clear picture of the body.
