Intel has been working with the Indian Institute of Technology in Kharagpur on ways to cut the amount of data needed in videoconferencing (WO 0203709). Today’s video compression systems divide each image into a mosaic of rectangles, compare how they change, and transmit only this data. Most videoconference images are of talking heads, so Intel suggests dividing them into triangles instead, because they fit more naturally over curved surfaces. These can then be subdivided into smaller triangles to capture more detail for key areas such as the eyes and mouth. Larger triangles will do for the cheeks and foreheads. So, overall, the system needs less digital code for realistic pictures.
