The chief medical officer says the NHS could use genomic medicine more, especially for diagnosing and treating cancers and rare genetic disorders

THE UK鈥檚 National 午夜福利1000集合 Service should do more to exploit genomic medicine. 鈥淭his technology has the potential to change medicine forever but we need all NHS staff, patients and the public to embrace its huge potential,鈥 says chief medical officer Sally Davies in her annual report.

Davies wants genome testing to become as routine as having an MRI. In particular, she says, the NHS should be using genomics for cancer and rare inherited diseases.

Genetic testing of tumours is increasingly being used to see who can benefit from certain drugs. As for rare inherited diseases, it currently takes people four years before they are correctly diagnosed.

Focusing on cancer and rare inherited diseases makes sense, says Manuel Corpas of genetic diagnostic company Repositive. 鈥淭hese are the low-hanging fruit.鈥
