New Scientist recommends: Light-hearted crime series Poker Face

The books, TV, games and more that New Scientist staff have enjoyed this week

Charlie becomes involved in a feud between an aging race car driver and a hotheaded young upstart.

TV-wise, I have been decompressing with the light-hearted crime series . In it, chief protagonist Charlie (pictured above), played by Natasha Lyonne, is a down-on-her-luck casino worker with an infallible ability to tell when someone is lying.

On the run from a grudge-bearing casino boss, Charlie pinballs around the US, solving crimes at every turn. It’s a fun twist on the usual whodunnit format – becoming more of a how-to-prove-they-dunnit, but I couldn’t help being distracted by imagining how I would personally have put Charlie’s superpower to more profitable use.

At the cinema, I succumbed to peer pressure and saw Oppenheimer and in quick succession. I thought they complemented each other beautifully, and it was great to see so many people dressing up in pink in homage to the iconic toy. As a long-time fan of fancy dress, I hope wearing film-themed clothing for cinema trips becomes de rigueur.
