Maurice Jacob, former head of the Theory Division at CERN and former editor
of Physics Letters B and of Physics Reports, looks behind the scenes of physics,
especially the way journals are (or were) published. Although not intended as
such, In the Wings of Physics (World Scientific, £20, ISBN 981 02 2178 9)
stands as a timely historical document describing the quaint old days before the
World Wide Web became the most important “journal” for physicists. It seems as
remote as the age of the typewriter.
