The dedicated nurse sacrificing all for her patients is an enduring image.
But how relevant is it now? In Beyond Caring (University of Chicago Press,
£13.50/$16.95, ISBN 0 226 10102 9) Daniel Chambliss uses powerful
case histories to argue that hospital rules and routines have changed the role
of nurses. Ethical issues about how nurses should carry out their work often
turn into territorial battles between different professional groups. Only very
strong personalities survive the moral minefield.
