In 1988, carbon dating showed linen cloth from the Shroud of Turin to come
from the 14th century. Harry E. Gove’s Relic, Icon or Hoax? (Institute of
Physics, £19.50, ISBN 0 7503 03980), a memoir by a scientist involved in
this research, tells the inside story, with details of many alarms before the
dating deed was done.
