OPALS, diamonds, sapphires, rubies, garnets and emeralds are regularly found
in Australia by amateur fossickers. Nance and Ron Perry have written
a guide to the gemstones in each state and the Northern Territory. The Perrys
explain how to recognise the gems in their natural state and, with the help of
maps, discuss the best places to find them. Their book, A Fossicker’s Guide
to Gemstones in Australia, is now available (A$24.95, Reed
