Fallen eagles

30 August 1997

British holiday-makers on their way to Disneyworld in Florida are being
accused of destroying a bald eagle’s nest鈥攁lbeit indirectly. The tree in
which the birds were nesting was cut down by officials at Orlando Sanford
Airport. British tour operators have begun to fly to Sanford to avoid the high
landing fees at nearby Orlando International. Airport officials argue that the
large eagles might collide with planes and cause a crash, but critics claim the
eagles鈥攁 protected species in the US鈥攚ere simply interfering with
plans to expand the airport’s runways.
