Phones as small as buttons are promised by Philips as it unveils a method of
miniaturising radio-frequency devices and fixing them to insulating substrates.
Silicon is the usual base for such tiny devices, but its semiconducting
properties limit the size of the radio components—make them too small and
they start interfering with each other. Circuits on an insulator don’t have the
same problems and power consumption is 10 times less, says Philips.
