Labels on the impotence drug Viagra will in future carry stronger safety
warnings, following at least 130 deaths among men in the US taking the drug.
Although the deaths haven’t been blamed on the drug, the US Food and Drug
Administration says the new label will stress that Viagra’s safety hasn’t been
studied in men with heart problems. The new label also lists rare side effects
not seen in clinical trials, including painful, prolonged erections of more than
four hours’ duration and temporary vision loss. Pfizer, the drug’s manufacturer,
says that amendments to labels are routine for new drugs.
