Religion tells us about what ought to be, science deals only with what is.
But religion is resorting to a scientific approach and language. Science
“proves” the truth of the Bible, assert some, and demonstrates the power of
prayer. In a society that protects free speech, Steven Goldberg argues in
Seduced by Science: How American Religion has Lost its Way, that if religionists
comment on research, they should avoid an infatuation with science and instead
concentrate on a message of humility, values and faith. Published by New York
University Press, £20, ISBN 081473104X.
