You will also enjoy talks and excursions led by the ship’s experienced expedition team, whose expertise spans fields including marine biology, ecology, geology and ornithology, enriching the journey with lectures, guided excursions and wildlife-spotting opportunities.

This expedition is designed for anyone who enjoys looking beyond the surface of a destination. Whether your interests lie in wildlife, conservation, ecology, engineering or geography, or simply understanding how the world works, this voyage offers the opportunity to explore Central America through the perspectives of science, nature and discovery.

In partnership with AE Expeditions and Discover The World.

Day 1: Arrive in Panama City

On arrival at Panama City airport, make your way to the arrivals hall, where you will meet one of the team from AE Expeditions. You will then be transferred to your group hotel. At the hotel, visit the hospitality desk in the lobby to meet the AE Expeditions team, who will provide you with useful information regarding pre-embarkation procedures and about your time in Panama City.

You will have the rest of the day to relax or explore independently.

Day 2: Panama City walking tour and Panama Canal Museum

Today you will enjoy a walking tour through Panama City and its UNESCO-listed Casco Viejo district, tracing the city’s remarkable evolution from an early strategic settlement to one of the world’s great trading crossroads. Founded in 1673 after the destruction of the original city by the Welsh privateer Henry Morgan, Casco Viejo became an important link in the movement of silver, gold and goods between the Americas and Europe. Its position on the narrow Isthmus of Panama helped shape its role in global commerce for centuries, culminating in the construction of the Panama Canal.

Your exploration continues at the Panama Canal Museum, where exhibits reveal the extraordinary scientific, medical and engineering challenges involved in creating a passage between the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. Learn how advances in tropical medicine, geology and engineering helped overcome one of the most ambitious construction projects in human history.

This evening, meet your fellow travellers and expedition team during your welcome reception.

Day 3: Miraflores locks and embarkation in Colón

Before boarding the Douglas Mawson, you will visit the Miraflores Locks, one of the most remarkable feats of 20th-century engineering. At the visitor centre, discover how gravity, hydrology and precision engineering work together to move vessels through the canal’s lock system. From the observation decks, watch ships being raised and lowered through chambers that connect two oceans across mountainous terrain. An IMAX presentation provides further insight into the canal’s construction, operation and continuing importance to global trade.

Later, transfer to Colón and embark the Douglas Mawson.

Day 4: Panama Canal transit: Engineering on a continental scale

Today you will undertake a full daytime transit of the Panama Canal, one of the defining engineering achievements of the modern era.

Constructed by the US between 1904 and 1914 following an earlier French attempt, the canal created a navigable route between the Atlantic and Pacific oceans, transforming global trade and maritime transport. As you pass through locks, channels and artificial lakes, a canal specialist explains the geology, hydrology and engineering that made the project possible. Learn how the canal transformed international shipping, altered global trade routes and overcame immense challenges posed by disease, terrain and tropical climate. Few journeys offer such a vivid demonstration of humanity’s ability to reshape geography on a continental scale.

Day 5: Balboa and Panama’s rainforests

When the ship is in port (days 5, 7, 8 and 9), a range of complimentary activities will be available each day. Led by the onboard expedition team, these experiences offer different perspectives on the region’s wildlife, ecosystems and culture. Before each outing, you will be invited to select the activity you would like to join, allowing you to choose the experiences that best match your interests.

This morning, you will have a choice of activities:

  • You can either visit an Emberá community, where traditional ecological knowledge continues to guide daily life in the rainforest. While here, you will discover how generations of observation have shaped sustainable relationships with local ecosystems, wildlife and natural resources.
  • Alternatively, ascend into the rainforest canopy by aerial tram. This elevated viewpoint reveals the structure of a tropical forest ecosystem, from the dark understory to the sunlit canopy where monkeys, sloths, toucans and epiphytic plants thrive.

Later, you will sail west towards Costa Rica.

Day 6: Day at sea crossing the eastern Pacific

As you sail along Central America’s Pacific coastline, enjoy a day at sea with opportunities to attend expert lectures and deepen your understanding of the natural history, ecology and geology of the regions ahead.

Day 7: Golfo Dulce exploration

Today you will arrive at the port of Golfito, the principal gateway to Golfo Dulce on Costa Rica’s southern Pacific coast. From here, you will explore this remarkable gulf, where rainforest-covered mountains descend directly to the sea. Golfo Dulce is often described as one of the world’s few tropical fjord-like ecosystems due to its exceptional depth and restricted connection to the open ocean. This unique geography creates nutrient-rich waters that support an extraordinary diversity of marine life, including dolphins, sea turtles, whales and numerous fish species, making it one of Costa Rica’s most important regions for wildlife and conservation.

Again, you will have the choice of a couple of different activities.

  • A whale-watching excursion to search for humpback whales, dolphins and other marine species in one of Costa Rica’s most important migration and breeding areas.
  • Alternatively, explore rainforest trails and investigate one of the most biodiverse terrestrial ecosystems on Earth, where intricate ecological relationships link plants, insects, birds and mammals.

Day 8: Quepos and Manuel Antonio

The forests and coastal ecosystems surrounding Quepos rank among the most biologically rich landscapes in Central America. You will have the option to:

  • Explore mangrove estuaries, where specialised trees stabilise coastlines, store significant amounts of carbon and provide nurseries for countless marine species. These highly productive ecosystems offer valuable insight into the role of coastal habitats in climate regulation and biodiversity conservation.
  • Alternatively, join a guided walk in Manuel Antonio National Park, where expert naturalists help reveal the complex interactions between tropical plants, insects, birds and mammals. Search for sloths, monkeys, colourful birdlife and an extraordinary diversity of plant species.
  • A third option explores Costa Rica’s agricultural heritage through coffee, cacao and vanilla cultivation, examining how sustainable farming practices support both local communities and tropical ecosystems.

Day 9: Costa Rica’s coffee highlands and San José

After disembarking in Puntarenas, journey into Costa Rica’s fertile Central Valley, where volcanic soils, elevation and climate combine to create ideal conditions for coffee cultivation.

At Hacienda Doka, learn about the botany, cultivation and processing of coffee, as well as the environmental factors that influence flavour and quality. Discover how agriculture, ecology and economics intersect in one of Costa Rica’s most important industries before enjoying a tasting of locally produced coffee and chocolate.

Continue to San José, the capital of Costa Rica, for your final evening.

Day 10: Depart San José

After breakfast, transfer to the airport for your onward journey, taking with you new insights into the engineering, ecology and cultures that shape Central America.

Guided by an expert chef, prepare a selection of classic dishes, from aromatic curry pastes and fragrant mains to traditional desserts, while gaining insight into the culinary traditions and regional influences that have shaped Thailand’s food culture.

Later, enjoy access to a day room at a local hotel, where you can relax, take a swim or freshen up before boarding your overnight sleeper train for the journey north.

Travel information: During the overnight train you will be travelling in soft sleeper class. Multishare compartments, air-conditioning, bunk beds, sheets and a pillow are provided. A curtain is installed at every berth which can offer privacy and more importantly, block the light that can interfere with sleep because the central lights are kept on through the night. Plug socket and reading light are available for every berth so passengers can charge their phone and laptop or read throughout their train ride. We recommend you bring a sleep mask and ear plugs if you are a light sleeper. There’s also a food and drink service on board. Note that your baggage will travel in the carriage with you.

Day 6: Arrival in Chiang Mai, afternoon city tour

Arrive in Chiang Mai, the historic capital of the Lanna Kingdom and the cultural heart of northern Thailand. After checking in, enjoy a free morning before setting out this afternoon to explore the city’s remarkable heritage. Begin at Wat Phra Singh, one of the finest surviving examples of Lanna temple architecture, renowned for its elegant design and revered Buddha images. Continue through the atmospheric streets of the old city to Wat Chedi Luang, whose monumental 15th-century stupa remains one of northern Thailand’s most impressive archaeological landmarks and once housed the Emerald Buddha.

Along the way, pause for coffee at Kha Ama Coffee, an inspiring social enterprise that works closely with Akha hill tribe communities to promote sustainable coffee cultivation while supporting local livelihoods. This provides an opportunity to learn about the environmental and social impact of highland agriculture in northern Thailand. End the day at Chiang Mai’s vibrant night market, where local crafts, regional specialities and street food offer an authentic introduction to the city’s rich cultural traditions.

Day 7: Wat Suan Dok and forest temple of Wat Umong

This morning, gain a deeper understanding of Thai Buddhism during a visit to Wat Suan Dok, where you will have the opportunity to take part in a Monk Chat. These informal conversations provide a unique chance to discuss Buddhist philosophy, daily monastic life and the role of temples in contemporary Thai society. You will also have the opportunity to offer a Sangkhatan (traditional alms set), an important act of merit-making in Theravada Buddhism.

Continue to the tranquil forest temple of Wat Umong, founded in the 14th century and renowned for its ancient brick meditation tunnels and peaceful woodland setting. As you explore the shaded grounds, discover how the natural environment has long played a role in Buddhist contemplative practice. Later, visit Baan Kang Wat, a creative community showcasing the work of local artisans, before concluding the day with an exploration of Ton Payom Market, where fresh produce and regional specialities offer an insight into the flavours and traditions of northern Thai cuisine. Return to your hotel in the late afternoon, with the remainder of the day at leisure.

You will have another talk this evening.

Day 8: Doi Inthanon National Park

Today, journey into Doi Inthanon National Park, home to Thailand’s highest peak and one of the country’s most important centres of biodiversity. Rising to 2,565 metres, the mountain supports a remarkable range of habitats, from evergreen cloud forest to montane ecosystems, making it a vital refuge for many rare plants and birds.

Accompanied by a local Karen guide, follow the Pha Dok Siew Nature Trail, a community-managed route that showcases the close relationship between people and the forest. The trail covers approximately 2.6 km (1.6 miles) and takes around 2–2½ hours to complete at a leisurely pace. Although there is an overall descent of around 400 metres from the park road to the valley below, the route is considered easy to moderate, following well-maintained paths and steps with a few steeper sections near the waterfall. Passing through cloud forest, alongside waterfalls, terraced rice fields and rich woodland, you’ll learn how generations of Karen communities have sustainably managed this landscape while preserving traditional ecological knowledge. The walk concludes in Ban Mae Klang Luang, where you can enjoy locally grown coffee before returning to Chiang Mai.

This evening, enjoy a farm-to-table dinner prepared with seasonal ingredients sourced from local producers, offering an opportunity to explore how agriculture, biodiversity and regional food traditions have shaped the culture and landscapes of northern Thailand.

Day 9: Tak bat observation, visit the Baan Rai Gong Khing Community and farewell dinner

Begin the day by observing the centuries-old tradition of tak bat (alms giving), as Buddhist monks make their early morning rounds through Chiang Mai. This quiet ritual offers a meaningful insight into Theravada Buddhism and the reciprocal relationship between monastic communities and the wider society, which has remained at the heart of Thai culture for generations.

Later, visit the Baan Rai Gong Khing Community, where sustainable agriculture, traditional crafts and community-led tourism combine to preserve northern Thailand’s cultural heritage. Explore the surrounding countryside by bicycle, cycling through peaceful rural landscapes and a picturesque tree-lined avenue before visiting local farms to learn about seasonal food production and rural livelihoods. Take part in hands-on workshops, including traditional glass painting and the preparation of herbal compresses, which draw on generations of local botanical knowledge. Relax with a herbal bath and traditional Thai massage before enjoying a lunch of regional specialities, including the iconic northern Thai dish khao soi.

This evening, round off the day with an exclusive dining experience created by Chef Tu Tu. Showcasing seasonal local ingredients and contemporary interpretations of traditional northern Thai cuisine, the menu celebrates the rich agricultural heritage and culinary innovation that have made Chiang Mai one of Thailand’s leading food destinations.

Day 10: Departure from Chiang Mai

Enjoy a relaxed final morning in Chiang Mai. Depending on departure arrangements, there may be time for a final stroll through a local neighbourhood or a visit to a café before saying farewell to your fellow travellers.

30 July 2027 – 12 days for £5,499 per person

This is one of five separate Morocco eclipse tours that are meeting up in Tangier to watch the eclipse. The other four tours have sold out. You can see all our amazing eclipse trips here.

This extended journey through Morocco weaves together cultural discovery with one of nature’s most extraordinary spectacles: the total solar eclipse on 2 August 2027. From the Mediterranean gateway of Tangier to the deep Sahara and the vibrant cities of the interior, this is a carefully paced exploration of landscape, history and science.

Throughout, you stay in premium accommodation and in Tangier enjoy the company of expert guides, including astronomer Dr Stuart Clark,New Scientist’s Abigail Beall and field archaeologist Dr Eve MacDonald. Their insights bring the experience to life, from the mechanics of eclipses and celestial motion to the wider workings of our universe. As with all New Scientist Discovery Tours, the emphasis is not just on seeing, but on understanding.

For the eclipse itself, you travel to an exclusive viewing location set within wide, open landscapes. Here, under carefully chosen conditions, you will witness an exceptional 4 minutes and 49 seconds of totality. As the moon’s shadow sweeps across the land and daylight fades into an uncanny twilight, the sun’s corona becomes visible in striking detail. With expert guidance, this rare alignment is revealed not only as a profound spectacle, but as a powerful demonstration of the dynamics of our solar system.

Beyond the eclipse, the journey unfolds through Morocco’s richly layered cultural landscape. In Fes, you explore one of the world’s oldest continuously inhabited cities, with its intricate medina and longstanding artistic traditions. You then continue towards the Sahara desert, staying in a desert camp where Morocco’s most elemental environments reveal how climate and geology shape ways of life.

The route continues via Aït Benhaddou and Ouarzazate, where architecture and archaeology illuminate centuries of adaptation at the crossroads of trade routes and empires. In the Atlas mountains, you encounter quieter rhythms of life among Berber communities, staying in a secluded mountain retreat surrounded by dramatic scenery.

The tour concludes in Marrakech, where two days allow for a deeper exploration of this dynamic city. Its palaces, gardens and historic quarters offer insight into a long tradition of ingenuity and design, where observation and practical knowledge have shaped daily life over centuries.

Together, these experiences create a journey that connects Morocco’s human stories with the wider patterns of the natural world and includes a shared moment beneath one of the most remarkable astronomical events of our time.

PACE AND PHYSICALITY

The eclipse viewing site is in the “natural” gardens of a private traditional rural restaurant in the mountains. To reach the site, there is a 400 metre uphill walk along a track.

The daytime temperatures in northern Morocco in August can get up to around 29°C (84°F), so please make sure you wear a sun hat and suncream and bring lots of water. Drinks will be provided at a central area of the viewing site, but we suggest you have additional water with you throughout the eclipse day.

When exploring Morocco sites, a basic level of fitness and mobility is required to enjoy these visits, as they will include walking on uneven surfaces.

The itinerary will include some walking, occasionally on rough ground, in order to fully experience the historical sites and mountains. The walking will be at a gentle pace but will not be suitable for guests with mobility issues. Walking shoes with ankle support and sturdy soles are highly recommended.

While Morocco is a relatively liberal country, modesty still prevails. For a more comfortable experience, female guests should wear clothing that covers their shoulders, chest and legs. Headscarves are not expected or required of non-Muslim women in Morocco.

There is a call to prayer five times a day from the early morning. It is meant to be loud and is a key part of the city soundscape. If you’re a light sleeper, earplugs may be useful.

On some of the days, you will be travelling long distances by comfortable air-conditioned coach.

Journey through western Turkey to explore the deep archaeological history of Anatolia, where some of the earliest complex societies in the Mediterranean emerged. From the multi-layered remains of Troy to the remarkably preserved streets of Ephesus, trace how settlement, urban life and technology evolved from prehistory through the Bronze Age and into the classical world.

The tour focuses on the long development of human society in Anatolia, where some of the earliest complex settlements and urban centres emerged. Key sites include Troy, where layered occupation reveals millennia of rebuilding and destruction, and Ephesus, one of the best-preserved Roman cities in the world. Additional visits to sites such as Pergamon and Aphrodisias as well as key coastal and inland archaeological landscapes provide insight into Hellenistic, Roman and earlier Anatolian cultures, illustrating how geography, trade and empire shaped civilisation over time.

You will be accompanied by a specialist archaeologist with extensive field experience in Anatolia and the wider eastern Mediterranean. They will provide on-site interpretation of architecture and artefacts, helping to connect visible remains with broader historical and cultural narratives. Their commentary bridges academic research and accessible storytelling, bringing each site into clearer focus.

This trip is designed for curious travellers with a passion for archaeology, ancient history and the origins of early civilisations. It is ideal for those who enjoy exploring sites on foot, standing among real excavations and seeing how everyday objects, ruins and landscapes are used to reconstruct lost worlds. While Gallipoli is best known for the First World War campaign of 1915, its archaeology reveals a far richer story. Across the peninsula, surviving trench systems, fortifications, shell craters and recovered military artefacts provide a remarkable case study in battlefield archaeology, allowing researchers to reconstruct both the experience of conflict and the rapid transformation of the landscape during the modern era.

The peninsula also occupies a pivotal position within the Dardanelles, the narrow waterway linking the Aegean and Black Seas. This strategic corridor has shaped patterns of migration, trade and warfare since prehistory, making it one of the most significant crossroads of the ancient world. From Bronze Age communities to the great empires of antiquity and beyond, control of these waters has repeatedly influenced the course of history.

Continue to Çanakkale, your base for exploring the legendary city of Troy. This evening, enjoy an talk from your expert, who will introduce the archaeology of Troy.

Day 3: Troy and Pergamon

Successive cities were built one atop another, creating an extraordinary archaeological sequence that has transformed our understanding of Bronze Age societies, trade networks and conflict. As you explore the site’s fortifications, gateways and domestic remains, discover how decades of excavation have disentangled the evidence behind one of history’s most enduring legends.

Continue to Pergamon, one of the great cities of the Hellenistic world. Explore its spectacular hilltop Acropolis, where the dramatic setting enhances impressive monuments including the steep theatre, the Temple of Trajan and the remains of the celebrated Library of Pergamon. Together, they illustrate the city’s remarkable achievements in architecture, urban planning and scholarship.

Later, travel to Selçuk for your overnight stay.

Day 4: Full day at Ephesus

Continue south through the Aegean landscape to Ephesus, one of the best-preserved classical cities in the Mediterranean. Its marble-paved streets, colonnaded avenues and monumental public buildings reveal the sophistication of Roman urban planning and the wealth generated by its position on major Mediterranean trade routes.

Explore highlights including the iconic Library of Celsus, the vast Great Theatre and the richly decorated Terrace Houses, where mosaics and frescoes offer a rare glimpse into domestic life. Together, these remarkable remains provide an exceptional archaeological record of one of the Roman world’s greatest cities.

Day 5: Pamukkale and Hierapolis

After breakfast, travel to Pamukkale, where mineral-rich thermal waters have sculpted the striking white travertine terraces for which the site is renowned. Above them lies the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Hierapolis, an ancient spa city whose baths, temples and extensive necropolis illustrate how communities harnessed this remarkable geothermal landscape for both ritual and everyday life. Explore how natural processes and human activity combined to create a unique cultural landscape before enjoying the remainder of the day at leisure.

Day 6: Fly to Istanbul. Afternoon city tour including the Blue Mosque, Hagia Sophia and the Hippodrome

This morning, you may choose to join an optional sunrise hot air balloon flight over Pamukkale, offering spectacular aerial views of the dazzling white travertine terraces and the ancient city of Hierapolis.

Day 1: Arrive in Jakarta

Arrive in Indonesia’s sprawling capital, Jakarta, on the island of Java where your journey into the rainforests of Borneo begins. A welcome meeting this evening provides an introduction to the expedition and an opportunity to meet your fellow travellers and accompanying conservation expert.

If arriving early, there is time to explore some of Jakarta’s museums, including the National Museum, whose collections reveal the extraordinary cultural and ecological diversity of the Indonesian archipelago. Your expert will introduce some of the themes that will shape the journey ahead, including biodiversity loss, tropical forest conservation and the ecological importance of Borneo’s peat-swamp forests.

Day 2: Palangka Raya and Tumbang Malahoi Longhouse

Fly this morning to Palangka Raya in Central Kalimantan, the Indonesian region of Borneo. On arrival, visit the Balanga Museum, where ethnographic collections and archaeological artefacts provide insight into the indigenous Dayak cultures of Borneo and their long relationship with the rainforest environment.

Continue by road to the village of Tumbang Malahoi, where you will stay in a traditional longhouse. These communal wooden structures have housed generations of Dayak families and are uniquely adapted to life in the tropical forest environment.

Following a traditional Tumpang Tawar blessing ceremony, your conservation expert discusses the links between indigenous knowledge and modern conservation science, exploring how local communities contribute to protecting biodiversity in Borneo’s rapidly changing landscapes.

Day 3: Forest ecology and village life

After breakfast, explore the village and surrounding forest with local guides. Learn how communities here continue to depend on the rainforest for fishing, forestry and small-scale agriculture, while balancing increasing environmental pressures.

A guided walk into the jungle introduces some of Borneo’s extraordinary biodiversity, from tropical hardwood trees and medicinal plants to the insects, birds and primates that inhabit this ecosystem. Your expert explains the ecological importance of rainforest structure, nutrient cycling and peatland carbon storage – critical topics in understanding the global climate significance of Borneo’s forests.

Return later to Palangka Raya for an evening at leisure.

Day 4: Orangutan rehabilitation at Kaja Island

Travel by local canoe along the serene Sei Gohong River to Kaja Island, home to a pre-release programme run by the Borneo Orangutan Survival Foundation (BOSF). Here, rehabilitated orangutans undergo the final stages of preparation before returning to the wild. This visit offers a fascinating insight into the science of orangutan rehabilitation. Learn how rescued animals are assessed, monitored and trained to redevelop the behaviours necessary for survival in the rainforest.

The wetlands surrounding Kaja Island also support rich birdlife and a variety of riverine species, making this an excellent introduction to Borneo’s peat-swamp ecosystems.

Afterwards, continue by road to Sampit on well-maintained but sometimes winding rural roads, offering a scenic glimpse of Borneo’s countryside.

Day 5: Into Tanjung Puting National Park

Journey to Kumai, gateway to Tanjung Puting National Park, before boarding a traditional klotok riverboat. Over the coming days, these slow-moving vessels provide an ideal platform for observing wildlife along the forested riverbanks.

Cruising upriver through dense rainforest, keep watch for proboscis monkeys, found only on Borneo, as well as kingfishers, hornbills and monitor lizards. Your conservation expert introduces the ecology of the national park and explains how river systems shape the distribution of wildlife throughout the region.

Discussions this evening focus on the history of orangutan conservation in Borneo and the role of protected areas in safeguarding endangered species.

Day 6: Camp Leakey and orangutan research

Travel deeper into the national park by klotok to Camp Leakey, one of the world’s most important centres for orangutan research. Established in 1971, the camp became internationally known through pioneering long-term studies of wild orangutan behaviour and ecology.

Visit the research and education centre to learn about decades of scientific work examining orangutan intelligence, tool use, diet and social structures. Along the way, your guides help identify some of the park’s other wildlife, including gibbons, macaques and wild pigs.

At the feeding station, observe orangutans at close range while your expert explains the behavioural differences between rehabilitated and fully wild individuals, as well as the ethical complexities surrounding wildlife tourism and conservation.

Return to the lodge by river, scanning the forest edge for further wildlife encounters.

Day 7: Pondok Tanggui and rainforest biodiversity

This morning, continue upriver to Pondok Tanggui feeding station. The forest trails here offer opportunities to spot butterflies, giant squirrels and a rich diversity of tropical plant life.

Your conservation expert discusses the extraordinary biodiversity of Borneo’s rainforests and the interconnected relationships between species, from seed dispersal by primates to the role of insects in maintaining forest health. How to get there

This tour begins in Jakarta. Please speak to Intrepid Travel, which can offer advice and book flights for those travelling from the UK.

Pace and physicality

On many days there will be walking, sometimes through dense ecosystems or at night. You must be comfortable being on foot, wear appropriate clothing and have a reasonable level of fitness. For example, being able to walk for a few hours on uneven terrain. None of the activities are compulsory and the pace of walking will be relaxed, so you can enjoy the surrounding flora and fauna.

In Indonesian Borneo, local klotoks and longboats offer a relaxed, gentle pace, with easy boarding and disembarking. Travelers can enjoy the river and rainforest scenery comfortably, stepping onto calm banks or simple wooden piers without hurry. The journey is leisurely and immersive, letting older guests experience the region at a soothing, accessible rhythm.

Wildlife viewing conditions

Wildlife viewing in Borneo often takes place from raised viewing platforms, canopy walkways and observation areas within the rainforest, offering a chance to spot animals in their natural habitat without disturbing them. These experiences rely on patience, quiet observation and a little luck, as many of Borneo’s most fascinating species are wild and free-ranging. Sightings of orangutans, proboscis monkeys, hornbills and other rainforest wildlife can never be guaranteed, but the platforms provide excellent vantage points for observing the forest ecosystem and the behaviours of the species that call it home. Early mornings and late afternoons are often the best times for activity, when the rainforest is cooler and wildlife is more likely to be on the move.

Accommodations

Please note: Accommodation in Indonesian Borneo is generally mid-range to boutique in style, with most lodges and resorts ranging from 2-star to 4-star standards. In rainforest areas expect eco-lodges and jungle retreats with basic but comfortable amenities, often designed to blend with nature rather than impress with opulence. You should anticipate warm local hospitality, practical comforts, and an immersive experience in Borneo’s unique natural environment.

Journey through Tunisia and uncover the rise and fall of two of the ancient world’s greatest powers – Carthage and Rome – across remarkably preserved landscapes that have changed little since antiquity. From the Mediterranean shores where Phoenician merchants founded a maritime empire, to the monumental inland cities that later proclaimed Rome’s dominance in Africa, this tour reveals Tunisia as one of the best-preserved classical regions anywhere in the Mediterranean.

Beginning at the ruins of Carthage, once Rome’s greatest rival, this journey explores the rise and fall of the powers that shaped ancient North Africa. From the hilltop grandeur of Dougga and the underground villas of Bulla Regia to the vast amphitheatre of El Jem, discover the remarkable legacy of Roman Africa. Set against a backdrop of Mediterranean coastlines, fertile plains and Saharan landscapes, the tour reveals how Tunisia became a meeting point of empires, cultures and ideas that transformed the ancient world.

You will be accompanied throughout by Dr Eve MacDonald, an ancient historian, field archaeologist and leading authority on Carthage and Roman North Africa. A Senior Lecturer at Cardiff University and author of several acclaimed books, including Carthage: A New History (2025), Eve will share her expertise through a series of talks and informal site seminars, bringing the ancient world vividly to life as you explore Tunisia’s remarkable archaeological heritage. You will also be accompanied by an expert local guide, who will offer insights into Tunisia’s culture, history and contemporary life throughout the journey.

This tour is ideal for anyone with an interest in archaeology, ancient history and the rise and fall of civilisations. Exploring some of the Mediterranean’s most remarkable yet under-visited archaeological sites, it offers a fascinating journey through the stories of Carthage, Rome and the cultures that shaped North Africa. Equally, it will appeal to curious travellers keen to venture beyond the usual tourist trail and gain a deeper understanding of Tunisia’s rich history, landscapes and heritage.

In partnership with Intrepid Travel.

Day 1: Arrive in Tunis

Welcome to Tunis! The capital city of Tunisia is characterised by its melting pot of cultural influences, including Arab, French and Berber, reflected in the architecture and languages. On arrival, you will be transferred to your hotel and check in.

Later in the evening, you will meet your fellow guests, Dr Eve MacDonald and your tour leader for a welcome meeting. After the welcome meeting Eve, will give her first talk, giving you an introduction to the story of Carthage, Rome and the Punic Wars ahead of your visit to Carthage tomorrow and setting the stage for the rest of the tour.

Afterwards, head to a local restaurant for a convivial welcome dinner.

Day 2: Bardo Museum, Carthage and Sidi Bou Said

After breakfast at your hotel, you will head to the Bardo Museum for a guided tour of its fascinating exhibits, which include some of the finest collections of Roman mosaics, as well as artefacts from throughout Tunisia’s history, from the prehistoric era to the modern day.

Afterwards, you will begin tour exploration of the expansive, open-air, UNESCO World Heritage Site of Carthage. Once the capital of the Punic world, and later a major Roman city, it is situated in the northern suburbs of modern-day Tunis. It held a key vantage as a port city, controlling the flow of trade between Sicily and North Africa. It was the major economic hub in the western Mediterranean for much of its existence and, in its prime, a bitter rival to Rome, until the city was destroyed in the third Punic war. It was subsequently rebuilt under Julius Caesar’s rule over 100 years later. At your visit to the site, you can still see key elements illustrating both Punic and Roman phases, including ports, baths and civic structures that reflect Carthage’s shifting imperial fortunes.

Continue to Sidi Bou Said, the iconic clifftop village known for its white and blue architecture and sweeping Mediterranean views. Enjoy time to explore its narrow streets and cultural atmosphere, before returning to your hotel in the city for an evening at leisure.

Day 3: Bulla Regia, Teboursouk and Dougga

After checking out of your hotel in the morning, depart Tunis and drive 2 hours inland through the fertile landscapes of northern Tunisia. Your first stop is Bulla Regia, renowned for its unique underground Roman villas, designed to escape the summer heat and remarkably preserved with mosaics still in situ.

Afterwards, you will be transferred onwards to to Dougga, sometimes called Thugga. The alternative name Thugga comes from the Latinisation of the original Libyan/Numidian name for the town. When the region became more heavily influenced by Arabs and their language over the centuries, the “d” sound became more favoured – both are still used. Before arriving at Dougga, take a brief stop at Teboursouk for an included box lunch. The journey time, in total, is just under 1.5 hours.

Dougga is one of the finest and best preserved examples of a Romanised Numidian city in North Africa, and is thought to be the first capital of the Numidian kingdom, only 15 minutes from Teboursouk. Set dramatically on a hillside, Dougga offers an impressive display of temples, theatres, baths and civic buildings that vividly illustrate what urban life may have been like in the 2nd and 3rd centuries AD, at the fringes of the Roman empire.

Check in to your hotel in Teboursouk and settle in for another fascinating talk from Eve on Masinissa, the Numidians and the indigenous cultures of North Africa, followed by dinner together.

Day 4: Kairouan

This morning, check out of your hotel and travel 2 hours to Kairouan. This is one of the most important cities of the Islamic world. Founded in 670 it was one of the prinicpal holy cities of the Maghreb and capital city of Ifriqiya during its early years. The city today bears testament to medieval urban development in the very buildings it is still home to. On a guided tour of the city, visit the Great Mosque of Kairouan, a masterpiece of early Islamic architecture, the Aghlabid Basins, an impressive medieval hydraulic system, and the historic medina – with free time for lunch.

In the later afternoon, check in to your hotel in Kairouan.

Day 5: Sufetula and Tozeur

After breafkast, check out of your hotel and continue west for 2 hours towards Sbeitla to visit the Roman ruins of Sufetula, a major Roman civic and religious centre. The remoteness of this site means that it has some of the best-preserved Roman buildings in all of North Africa, including forum temples, the Arch of Diocletian and the exquisite Arch of Antoninus Pius, whose carved details can still be made out. Walk among its temples, forum, baths and triumphal arches, gaining insight into the transition from pagan Roman worship to early Christianity.

In the early afternoon, proceed south toward the oasis town of Tozeur, on the edge of the Sahara desert. The journey should take around 3 hours. Check in to your hotel for two nights.

There will be an optional evening walk around the town, old quarter and oasis, for those who wish to partake.

Day 6: Tozeur and Jerid oasis

Spend the day exploring Tozeur, famous for its oasis landscapes and distinctive brick architecture. Visit the palm groves and learn about ancient and modern irrigation systems that sustain life in the desert environment. Learn all about the challenges of life in arid conditions, the desertification of southern Tunisia and agricultural and architectural techniques that help support the community that calls this place home.

Day 7: Chott el Jerid, Matmata and El Jem

Cross the vast salt flats of Chott el Jerid, a surreal landscape that formed part of ancient trade routes linking North Africa to the Sahara desert. Continue to Matmata, where you will visit traditional troglodyte dwellings carved into the earth, illustrating long-standing adaptations to arid climates. Those keen-eyed among you will recognise these sites from the Star Wars franchise.

Travel north to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of El Jem and its monumental 3rd-century-AD Roman amphitheatre, capable of holding 35,000 spectators, one of the largest in the Roman world and rivalling the Colosseum in Rome. Its scale and preservation reflect the wealth and importance of Roman Africa, but also a sign of imperial Roman propaganda in this province of the empire.

Head onwards to the coastal city of Sousse where you will spend the next two nights. In total, the driving time today is 5 hours.

Enjoy a third talk from Eve this evening at the hotel about the transition from Roman Africa to Islamic Ifriqiya.

Day 8: Sousse and Ribat of Monastir

This morning, explore the historic medina of Sousse, another UNESCO World Heritage Site. Visit the archaeological museum, housed within the kasbah, home to one of Tunisia’s finest collections of Roman mosaics. Walk through the medina’s streets, fortifications and harbour area, reflecting centuries of Mediterranean history from Roman times onward.

In the afternoon, visit the Ribat of Monastir, a 30-minute drive from Sousse. This defensive structure is an icon of the city and is the oldest Islamic fortress in northern Africa, built in 796 AD. Within its walls, towers and impressive sea gates, this fortress is also home to two mosques, one of which now houses a fascinating collection of medieval artefacts.

Return to Sousse in the late afternoon for an evening at leisure.

Day 9: Thuburbo Majus, Oudna and Zaghouan

Depart Sousse and travel north toward Tunis. En route, visit Thuburbo Majus, an important Roman town with well-preserved temples, baths and residential areas set amid olive groves. This site is not as well preserved or cared for as others in Tunisia, but it allows you to get up close to incredible mosaics, with barely any other tourists around. There is plenty yet to be excavated here.

Continue to Oudna (Uthina), a less-visited but impressive Roman site featuring an amphitheatre, capitol and aqueduct remains. Established by Augustus as a veteran colony, it grew to a sizeable town in the 3rd century AD. As you arrive here, the first thing you will notice is the large amphitheatre carved partly into the hillside, which could hold around 16,000 spectators.

Conclude the day at Zaghouan Water Temple, the monumental source of the Roman aqueduct that once supplied Carthage with water across more than 130 kilometres – one of the great engineering achievements of the Roman world.

Return to Tunis in the evening for a final farewell dinner together.

Day 10: Departure

Transfer to Tunis International Airport for departure, bringing to an end an in-depth exploration of the Roman and Carthaginian archaeological heritage of Tunisia.

How to get there

This tour begins and ends in Tunis, Tunisia. Please speak to Intrepid Travel, who can offer advice and book flights for those travelling from the UK.

Pace and physicality

There will be early starts on some of the days, due to the distances to be travelled.

To fully explore the ancient sites, there will be walking of up to 2 hours per visit. Much of it is on rocky ground, and some sites have quite a lot of stairs with no handrail, so you need to be relatively mobile and able to cope with a lot of uneven steps. Please ensure you wear comfortable, supportive footwear, have water with you during the site visits and we strongly recommend robust sun protection.

Archaeological sites in Tunisia are not as well maintained with regards to health and safety as compared to other sites aroudn the globe. PLease bear this in mind and enjoy the sites with caution.

Many of the sites do not have plaques or information panels explaining what you are seeing. However, you will have a local guide familiar with the sites and the expertise of Dr Eve MacDonald to help explain these sites in more detail.

Road quality varies depending on the region of Tunisia you are in but is generally of good quality. There may be more potholes around between Tozeur and Souuse on days 6 to 8.

You will be travelling in a 28-seater, air-conditioned minbus.

In April, the weather in Tunisia reaches average highs of 25°C and average lows of 17°C. On average it rains only 25mm in April, therefore good sun protection is recommended, including a hat, sunscreen and plenty of water.
